Initiated by Alliance Française de Mombasa in 2022, Sinema Mtaani was created as a free, open-air traveling film program to make cinema accessible to everyone, especially youth across Mombasa's sub-counties. Supported by the French Government’s Création Africa programme, the initiative has continually provided a platform to showcase quality Kenyan and African cinema.
Now, in an exciting new chapter launched at Fort Jesus during the 5th Mombasa Ocean Festival, Alliance Française de Mombasa collaborated with the European Union in Kenya to launch the EU Sinema Mtaani Pwani Tour, a flagship initiative celebrating EU in Kenya at 50 and strengthening the cultural bridge between Kenya and Europe.
To anchor these screenings in coastal heritage, the National Museums of Kenya joined the movement to open up historic sites and public grounds to local communities. Supported by County Governments and local partners across the region, the tour is now officially on the road!
From 30th September through December 2026, this mobile open-air cinema will travel across five coastal counties, bringing free film screenings, local storytelling, and engaging community dialogue straight to local neighborhood.
